Bury - Heart of a village

Bury has several residences from another era and culture. This is explained by the ancestry of the families who immigrated here in 1836 before the municipality was founded in 1855. Bury residents came from modest backgrounds and from rural parts of England, such as Norfolk, Suffolk and Kent. After 1837, only a few Gaelic families from the Isles of Lewis and Lochbroom came to settle in the area. Forestry and agriculture were — and still are — the mainstays of the economy.

Heritage buildings on Main, Stokes and McIver Streets:

  • Victoria Hall (1865) which houses the Municipal Office (Library): 569 Main Street.
  • Memorial Park: right behind the Victoria Hall.
  • The Fairview brick schoolhouse (1907): 535-A, Main Street.
  • The former United Church (1898): 560 Main Street.
  • The Saint-Paul Anglican Church: still active.
  • The Saint-Raphael Catholic Church: still active.
  • The Cemetery on McIver Street.
  • St-John’s Anglican Church: a hilltop edifice that only gets more beautiful with age.
