The town of Cookshire-Eaton is the result of a merger in 2002, which united the town of Cookshire and the municipality of Eaton. With 5,886 residents, it is the largest municipality in the Upper St. Francis. Its 567 square kilometres are crisscrossed by scenic roads, along which visitors will travel through hamlets and see many interesting sites. Among them is Cookshire which was founded by the Loyalists, though the area was long traveled by the Abenakis who had seasonal camps in the region. Cookshire owes its name to Captain John Cook, who by 1795, was the first colonist to acquire land. Today, the agriculture and forestry sectors predominate. Several buildings are considered historical landmarks.
The Compton County Historical Society Museum is housed in a former Congregationalist Church dating to 1841, and the old Eaton Academy, both of which were recognized as historic sites in 1963. The museum focuses on the history of the first colonists in the region.
