Created in 1971 by the merger of seven towns, the Town of Lac-Brome surrounds the magnificent lake of the same name. Loyalists were the first to colonize the region after the American Revolution. Their influence and heritage are well preserved in Knowlton, which is the centre of Brome Lake, and which is named in honour of Paul Holland Knowlton. Knowlton built the first dam and mill on the Cold Brook. Since about 1867, people have been attracted to this area, which the Canadian Handbook Tourist Guide described as extraordinary. In May 1997, the magazine L’Actualité designated Knowlton one of the twenty most beautiful villages in Quebec.
