Once and once and once, and very good times ... ...men gathered around a fire, whisky near to hand. And the place and time led the talk to turn to other places and other older times from which were spun the threads that brought them together. Here, Mike Burns, intrigued by the history of the Eastern Townships, has spun a colourful tale of the beginnings of the Townships. Initially told in concert and recorded, the story was then transcribed in its French and English versions.

Il était une fois... ...des aventuriers autour d'un feu avec une bouteille de whisky, avec cette fée qui délie les langues et fait revivre les ancêtres. Mike Burns a ici relevé le défi d'écrire un conte sur les origines américaines, britanniques et canadiennes-françaises des Cantons-de-l'Est. D'abord présenté sur scène, le conte a ensuite été transcrit en français et en anglais avec les nuances de l'imaginaire du conteur.

Canton de Shefford

Un brin d'histoire...
Fondé en 1792 par les Loyalistes ayant fui les États-Unis, le Canton de Shefford se place sous le signe de la vie pionnière et de l'authenticité rurale. Aux limites est du territoire de la Haute-Yamaska, l'ancien hameau de Frost Village, nommé ainsi en l'honneur des frères Frost qui en furent les fondateurs, montre quelques beaux spécimens patrimoniaux. Ce sont là les dernières témoins de l'histoire d'une agglomération qui, pour un bref instant, rivalisa d'importance avec Waterloo.

Shefford est aujourd'hui une municipalité à caractère semi-rural. Le territoire est dominé par le Mont-Shefford qui offre plusieurs magnifiques points de vue sur la région. On y retrouve également une partie de la piste cyclable l'Estriade au sud de la montagne ainsi que le Parc écologique Jean-Paul Forand, des sentiers à découvrir. Ses quelques 200 km de petites routes secondaires se prêtent bien aux randonnées à vélo.

Bromont - Heart of a village

Bromont�??s history begins at the end of the eighteenth century with the arrival of the Loyalists. These pioneers were followed by French-speaking and Irish settlers, and the different communities flourished in harmony. The year 1964 marked the birth of the city of Bromont, and by the mid-1970s, the municipality included parts of Farnham East, Brome, Granby and Shefford townships, as well as the villages of West Shefford and Adamsville.

At that time, members of the founding Desourdy family, planned the development of the area based on two major axes — tourism and high-technology. Bromont�??s energy and growth over the last forty years have contributed significantly to the rapid development of the industrial, athletic, cultural and tourism sectors in the region.

Village of West Shefford
The village of West Shefford was the cradle of colonization in this area. John Savage, the first settler in the Upper Yamaska, arrived in 1793. And even though two communities — English-speaking and French-speaking — have influenced the history of the area, we will find that the former has had a more lasting effect on local heritage.

Village of Adamsville
This little village was the last territory in the Upper Yamaska to be �municipalized� before the creation of Bromont in 1964. A few buildings still recall the memory of the industrial village of Adamsville, in the days of tanneries and mills in the second half of the nineteenth century. This village was the first to be amalgamated with Bromont in 1974.

Chocolate Museum
Adjoining the sweet shop, Confiserie Bromont, the chocolate museum provides information and conferences on this delicious product. Children and adults will be seduced by chocolate during their visit!

Attractions and Special features

Bromont Ski Centre
Created in 1964 by the Desourdy family. In the summer, numerous activities are offered at the water park, including rafting, Tarzan rope, waterslides, pool, Pirate Island for toddlers, mountain sleds, and more. Mountain biking trails: 12 trails accessible by ski-lift.
