This area’s first settlers came from New England in 1800. However, the area was not fully developed until the establishment of the first paper mills in the 1850s. On one side of the region is the township municipality and on the other is charming Windsor Mills village. The village was upgraded to a town in 1899 and officially named Windsor Mills in 1914. Many people will recognize the name Windsor because it is home to Domtar, an ultra-modern factory which produces paper products.
Founded in 1864 during the American Civil War, the Poudrière de Windsor manufactured black powder, one of the main ingredients of explosives. Until 1922, Windsor relied heavily on this industry. Today, visitors can discover the secrets of this industry by visiting a permanent, interactive exhibition. Guided tours are brought to life through the many relics from the past housed in the 56 buildings that once made up the factory. The park also offers numerous natural discoveries along its footpaths. A gift shop and outdoor picnic facilities are available to visitors.
